RESEARCH

The Civil War Museum of Philadelphia interprets the struggle for freedom, equality, and national unity in the mid-19th century; tells the story of the Civil War from the perspectives
of the individuals who shaped it; and inspires a renewed dedication to the nation’s founding principles today.

Founded in 1865 by veteran Union Army, Navy and Marine corps officers (MOLLUS), and chartered in 1888, the Civil War Museum of Philadelphia is the oldest Civil War institution in the United States. The Civil War Museum's purpose is to preserve the history of that conflict and to promote public education through programs, research, and exhibitions.

The Museum's holdings include over 3,000 artifacts, more than 7,000 photographs, and hundreds of art works. Firearms, edged weapons, uniforms, paintings, photographs and flags are among the many objects in the collection.

A library of over 7,000 volumes and archival material will be housed at the Civil War Heritage Center in the Union League of Philadelphia.

As the Museum prepares for its
new home, we are temporarily closed
to the visiting public.
