Battle log with artillery shell lodged in it from the Battle of Gettysburg.
This log was cut from a tree of the western slope of Big Round Top in Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863, a shell from Reilly's North Carolina Battery fired at Union forces defending Little Round Top lodged in this tree. The tree fell in a storm in 1906, and the section was cut and preserved as a war relic.

 

The pocket watch of Capt. John Foering, 28th Penna. Vol. Inf.  This watch was in his vest pocket at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864.  The watch was struck by, and deflected, a bullet that should have killed him.

 

 

Stuffed head of Old Baldy, Gen. George G. Meade’s battle horse.  Old Baldy served with Gen. Meade from 1861 to 1864, when he was retired due to his wounds.  Old Baldy died of natural causes on a farm just outside Philadelphia in 1882. Click on Old Baldy's photo for more information

 

 

Recruiting poster for the 118th Penna. Vol. Inf.  Know as the Corn Exchange regiment because it was funded by the Corn Exchange Bank, this Philadelphia regiment saw significant action at such battles as Shephardstown, Fredericksburg, Chancelorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Petersburg. The regiment mustered out at the end of the war.

Soldier’s pocket knife from the Civil War.  This folding pocket knife and tools features a knife, corkscrew, and other tools.  The initials “M.K.” are carved into the bone handle.  The soldier who carried it has not been identified.

 

 

 

The smoking jacket of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.  The smoking jacket was made for Davis by a slave in his household.  The jacket was captured with the rest of Davis’ baggage on May 10, 1865, as he attempt to escape to Texas in order to carry on the Confederate war effort there.

 

 

Officer’s dress chapeau of gen. Robert Patterson.  A native of Philadelphia, Patterson was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War.  He commanded the Union forces in the Shenandoah Valley at the very beginning of the war.
